At first I will underline some important terms for a further statement.
Bit (bit, b) - the Category of binary number. It is the minimum portion of information which stores or processes the computer. One category in the binary number, accepting values 0 or 1, is called as bit.
Byte (byte) - Unit of data equal to 8 binary figures (bats). One byte it is enough for coding of one symbol, for example, a letter of the alphabet (a) or an ampersant (&). Capacities of accumulative devices, such as disks, are measured in bytes. In bytes it is measured as well the volume of transferred information.
bps (bps) - bits per second (bit a second). The bps is a unit of measure of speed of data transmission in communication systems.
Bps (Bps) - Bytes per second (byte per second). The Bps is a unit of measure of volume of the transferred data.
Further derivative units - kilobits (kb), kilobytes (kb), Megabits (Mb), Megabytes (MB) and units of the speed received by their transfer for 1 second begin. Pay attention to a subtlety in designations between units differing from each other in one thousand times :-).
As you for certain noticed, the Byte is equal to 8 bits, that is, at connection by the modem at a speed of 48 kb / with the settlement speed of a gallop of files has to be 48000: 8 = 6000 or 6 kb / page. In practice, however, during the work the office information is transferred in the Internet also, about 5%) and therefore the speed of a gallop of files happens slightly less theoretical (without work of algorithms of compression of the modem) and it is more convenient (realistichny) to estimate speed division on 10 for account simplification. All that will turn out above this result will be a pleasant surprise.
So, at connection of the modem at a speed of 48 kb / with almost we will receive the speed of downloading of 4,8 kb / page.
Here also were defined.
To test speed the unlimited internet click here: http://speedtest.net
Speed of connection it is measured in kilobits per second, and number of received or transferred information - in kilobytes per second. And, a theoretical ratio between them - 1:8, and in practice approximately - 1:10. For channels of more high-speed, such as my present ADSL 750/96 it means that the speed of my connection - 750 kilobits/sec. at reception of files (i.e. Download) and 96 kilobits/sec. by transfer (i.e. Upload). At such speeds I can receive and give information. In units of quantity it means that I can download files at a speed near the 75th kilobyte per second and give them with a speed of 9,6 kilobyte per second. All that turns out over this speed, I remind, a pleasant surprise. This surprise can be increased slightly, having been engaged in exact and thin control of connection (I hope still to return to it).
At modem installation with incomplete drivers in a line of the status not the actual speed of connection and speed of port to which the modem is connected sometimes is shown. Therefore if your all time is shown the same and maximum speed of connection, most likely this indication tells nothing about the actual speed.
The movie 1.4Gb will be loaded:
256 kbps = 16 hours
1 Mbit/sec. = 4 hours
16 Mbit/sec. = 14 min.
100 Mbit/sec. = 2 min.
